Spanish:  The goal of our Spanish program is to instill an awareness of a second language and the culture that speaks it. This is done with games, puppet shows, rhymes and songs. The students practice orally and write what they hear in class. Spanish in Junior High is more academically oriented. Communication is receptive, involving listening and reading, as well as productive, involving speaking and writing. Students will be able to comprehend and evaluate a wide variety of authentic Spanish texts on familiar topics and will be able to write spontaneously with sufficient fluency. In addition there will be different projects, assemblies and field trips during the school year.

Art: The art program works on projects that give students the opportunity to compare different art styles and to understand more about how one type of art can influence another. For example, students will learn about Japanese Art and its influence on Impressionism in the 1800's, how Impressionism changed the rules in Western Art, and how modern artists continue to make their own rules when creating art today. Within each art project, students will work with specific art elements (line, color, shape, form, etc.) and will learn about specific properties of each as they create theri own art.In ceramics, students will use coil and slab construction to create pottery influenced by Japanese, Impressionist and Modern Artists.
Each class will have at least one project that reviews important eras in Architecture, and its influence on later buuilding designs. For example, the basics of ancient Greek and Roman Architecture will allow students to better appreciate their imprint on famous American architecture such as the White House and the Capital Building.

Music:  Sacred Heart School offers music instruction to students from kindergarten to eighth grade. The music classes give the students the opportunity to experiment with rhythm and keyboard instruments. Depending on the class level, the students learn to read musical notation, melodic lines, rhythm and key signatures. The students participate in the weekly masses by preparing and performing the mujsic that supports the liturgy. All students prepare and perform for the annual Christmas program, Candles and Carols.

Physical Education: Sacred Heart Physical Education is designed to help our young people learn the importance of physical fitness. Through selected program activities, our students will acquire skills to increase their endurance, strength, and flexibility while receiving recognition for their efforts and accomplishments. By developing good health habits that last a lifetime, our youth can become productive and fulfilled adults. The framework for activities are the Presidential Fitness tests which help students compare their results with like students nationally. Other team activities are adjusted to the appropriate physical development of each grade level.

Computers: All students pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade receive computer instruction. Our philosophy is the use of technology as a tool for learning, integrated into the curriculum as seamlessly as possible. Early grades receive lab time once a week, with emphasis on subject area skills reinforcement, keyboarding, and extension activities related to classroom projects. Middle school classes have a greater use of the computer lab, with insrtuction that extends the use of applications such as PowerPoint and Inspiration to support writing and research assignments. In addition, all lower grade classrooms also have networked computers for class use.
Junior High students have a 1-to-1 program, with each student assigned his/her own laptop iBook for use in all subject areas. Each teacher may design assignments and projects that require computer skills. Research and note-taking are also facilitated. Additional lab time offers instruction in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and audio-visual applications. Multi-media presentations enhance student creativity.
