Sacred Heart School fifth graders continue preparation for junior high by working on organizational skills, experiencing departmentalized teaching, and using higher level thinking skills. Group and individual projects reinforce responsibility and accountability.

The fifth grade literature strand and basal reader augment vocabulary and introduce higher-level comprehension skills. Book reports on independent reading are required. Grammar usage and mechanics are reinforced through a language arts text, as well as students’ writing in journals and independent exercises. Writing formats include narratives, tales, research reports, essays, and poems. Weekly spelling lessons also aid in vocabulary building, writing and editing.

Fifth graders build confidence in their math skills through problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and connecting with other knowledge. Topics include: number operations, mixed numbers, ratios, percentages, and further work on decimals, fractions, and probability.

U.S. History is covered from the age of exploration to current times. ( see COLONIAL FAIR) Science topics include: systems in living things, solar system, matter and energy, populations and ecosystems, solid earth, and light and sound.

The sacramental life of the Catholic Church and the presence of Jesus in our lives are the focus of the 5th grade religion curriculum. Supplemental instruction in life skills is provided in conjunction with Family Services of Winnetka / Northfield.
