Sacred Heart School first graders enjoy the companionship of friends from kindergarten, the familiarity and comfort of a small, supportive school environment, and the guidance of caring, excellent teachers while making the transition to a full-day academic focus.

With a solid background in reading readiness, the students continue on the path to reading through basal readers and in-class and home usage of a continually-expanding word list. Phonics topics include letter variants and blends, contractions, and alphabetical order. Questioning, challenging, and summarizing continue to develop reading comprehension skills. Writing focuses on creative short stories and poems.

Math concepts expand to include addition, subtraction, place value, and further work on money and time. Supplemental instruction is received in Everyday Mathematics, which emphasizes verbal interaction and manipulative activities.

The social studies curriculum focuses on the world around us, including the land, people, and their relationships and responsibilities. Science topics offer an overview to plants and animals.

The gifts that Jesus gave us are the focus of the first grade religion curriculum. Holiday celebrations and Catholic beliefs further the studies.
