Responsibility for one’s own work is emphasized through a series of creative and fun projects.The fourth grade literature strand includes five novels. Topics tie into the regions and time periods discussed in social studies. Outside reading, in various subject areas, is required through eight book reports of differing formats. Grammar mechanics are reinforced through lessons and the writing of various types of paragraphs. The writing process is emphasized, including prewriting, writing, revising, proofreading, and publishing. A basal reading and phonics text and weekly spelling lessons complete the language arts curriculum.
Multiplication is expanded to more digits, while division is learned. Other mathematics topics include: data, graphs, probability, fractions, decimals, and geometry basics.The five regions of the U.S. are covered in social studies. Students participate in a number of related field trips and research-based projects.
Science units include: classification of living things, properties of matter, earth’s land, weather and climate, and magnetism and electricity. (See SCIENCE FAIR.)
Morality is the focus of the religion curriculum. Supplemental instruction in life skills is provided in conjunction with Family Services of Winnetka / Northfield.
