Sacred Heart School second graders continue their academic journey, while enriching their spiritual lives through preparation for their First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.Students evolve into independent readers, appreciating the value of reading in the pursuit of knowledge and enjoyment. Word recognition and decoding are worked on through a basal reading and phonics program. Weekly spelling lessons also include skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Students learn and experience the steps of the writing process in a variety of projects, while emphasizing sentence structure.
Addition and subtraction facts are expanded to 18. Two digit addition and subtraction, with and without regrouping, are covered and then expanded to three digits. Topics are supplemented and reinforced through the “Everyday Mathematics” curriculum.
Social studies emphasizes community, family, landforms and maps. A variety of projects and field trips enhance the learning. Science curriculum includes dinosaurs, fossils, and earth’s weather, resources and surface features.
In religion, students focus on development of a sound personal and communal prayer life, with special emphasis on the year’s two sacraments.
