Sacred Heart School third graders begin the evolution to the teaching structures and methodologies of the older grades. Students focus on organizational skills and taking responsibility for one’s own work.
Sacred Heart School’s literature strand begins in the third grade with an imaginative three-part novel. Reading and comprehension skills are furthered through basal reading and phonics texts, as well as weekly spelling lessons. Language arts curriculum includes sentence types and parts of speech. The writing focus is on paragraph structure, as well as poetry and creative writing.

In math, students look for clues to solve story problems. They also write story problems for their peers. Math games for school and home and a daily “Math Challenge” reinforce facts and enliven the learning. The math curriculum includes expanding place value in addition and subtraction, as well as multiplication facts, and beginning fractions and decimals.

Illinois history and federal government structure highlight third grade social studies. Science topics include motion and force, work and machines, light, sound, life cycles, and the sun and moon. (See SCIENCE FAIR.)

Kindness and teamwork are stressed in third grade, along with appreciating the unique qualities of each individual. The religion curriculum includes the Ten Commandments and the parish community. Supplemental instruction in life skills is provided in conjunction with Family Services of Winnetka / Northfield.
